Adding Some Shape to Your Lips

Not everyone can have lips like Angelina Jolie, at least not naturally. But who says everything has to be natural? Restylane Silk and various Juvederm products are FDA approved for lip enhancement and Dr. Walk uses them to give our Cosmetic Dentistry patients the plump, full, kissable lips they’ve always wanted.
These hyaluronic acid fillers fill out the lips and they also address the vertical wrinkles on the lips and other lines around the mouth.
What are these lip fillers?
You’ve heard of Restylane, the hyaluronic acid filler used for treatment of wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. Restylane was actually the first dermal filler approved by the FDA back in December 2003. But in January of 2015 a new member was added to the Restylane family, Restylane Silk. Restylane Silk is a smooth gel designed to restore natural definition and symmetry to the lip and mouth area.
Juvederm was first approved by the FDA in 2006. Like Restylane, different products have been added for different areas of the face. Juvederm Ultra and Ultra Plus add visible volume to the lips. Juvederm Volbella was added to the product line in 2016 to add subtle volume to the lips.
How do these filler augment the lips?
Dr. Walk uses these fillers in two ways: to enhance the lips and to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on the lips and the surrounding areas. These wrinkles are sometimes called “barcode†lines, and these products fill out and erase these vertical lines.
How do they work?
Restylane Silk and Juvederm Ultra, Ultra Plus, and Volbella are made of clear, hyaluroic acid gel that has been formulated specifically for the lips and surrounding areas of the face. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the human body. Its job is to plump and hydrate the skin. It does this by binding with water molecules. Different fillers have different particle sizes, depending on the goal of the filler. For the lips, Silk and Volbella have the smallest particle sizes and create the most subtle augmentation.
What will my results be like?
Studies by the manufacture of Silk have results that show 98 percent of patients noticed significant improvement in the fullness of their lips and surrounding wrinkles 14 days after their injections. Juvederm has similar statistics. Restylane results last about six months, while the Juvederm fillers add volume for 9-12 months.
