Make a Resolution to Have Whiter Teeth

At Cosmetic Dentistry Center, it’s our daily mission to help our patients enjoy the fruits of a healthy, beautiful smile. One aspect of that has white teeth. To that end, we provide Zoom! Why do my teeth become stained?
Our teeth become stained with the foods and drinks we consume, as particles from the foods and drinks lodge in the porous enamel layer that covers our teeth. Drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine, and certain fruit juices all stain the teeth, as do foods such as raspberries, blueberries, and even dark chocolate! These stains all affect the outer enamel, and they can be removed.
There is a second type of staining where the interior of the tooth, called the dentin, is stained. This happens due to drug reactions — the antibiotic tetracycline is the main culprit — and from trauma. This type of staining usually begins as a yellow tint, but then it eventually ends up making the tooth grey. This interior type of staining cannot be “whitened.†Covering the teeth with porcelain veneers is the only way to cosmetically address dentin stains.
What is the Zoom! Tooth Whitening System?
Zoom! is a powerful whitening tool. We administer it in our Newton office, plus offer take-home trays for touch-ups at home.
The first step of our Zoom! Treatment is to protect your lips and gums by applying a special gel. Next, we paint the surfaces of your teeth with the Zoom! Whitening agent. This agent is activated with a special light. After 20 minutes we remove the whitening agent. We repeat this process twice more over the course of about one hour.
The results? Zoom! Whitens your teeth from seven to 10 shades!
Why not just use over-the-counter home whiteners?
People sometimes ask us why they should use our Zoom! The program when they can simply buy whitening systems at the drug store or Costco. The difference is the strength of our Zoom! Whitening agents. Over-the-counter options are not nearly as strong or effective. Plus, since we paint the whitening agent onto your teeth, we make sure it is applied evenly. The same can’t be said about strips that may not fit very well, leaving some tooth surfaces less effectively whitened. That can make for an uneven final result.
Plus, there is a safety/comfort issue with store-bought whiteners. Their whitening agents can get on your gums, cheeks, and tongue, causing irritation and pain.
